Quintana Roo, Mexico

I kicked the summer off soo right this year in the south of México! I spent 11 days and 11 nights traveling the state of Quintana Roo, which is located on the Yucatán Peninsula and includes an assortment of islands to visit right off the coast. On its Caribbean coast, the town of Tulum offers seaside Mayan ruins, sandy beaches, and underwater caves. The ancient Mayan name of the city was Zama, meaning “dawn” or “sunrise,” which is appropriate given its location. Built on a bluff facing the rising sun, the ruin site is the only Maya settlement located on the beaches of the Caribbean. To the northeast, the resort city of Cancún is known for its nightlife, Nichupté Lagoon nature reserve, and long beaches with coral reefs. I stayed in the city of Playa del Carmen along with two DC natives (a.k.a. Washingtonians) that I traveled with. Keep scrolling to find out how I spent my time in in Playa!
