  1. Research your destination: Before you commit to a study abroad program, it’s important to thoroughly research the country or region where you’ll be living. Learn about the culture, customs, and language, and find out what the cost of living is like.

  2. Choose the right program: There are many study abroad programs to choose from, so it’s important to find one that fits your needs and interests. Consider factors like academic focus, location, housing options, and cost when making your decision.

  3. Plan your finances: Studying abroad can be expensive, so it’s important to plan your finances well in advance. Research the cost of tuition, room and board, travel, and personal expenses, and make a budget.

  4. Apply for scholarships: There are many scholarships available for study abroad students, so be sure to research and apply for as many as possible to help offset the cost.

  5. Obtain necessary documents: Depending on your destination, you may need a passport, visa, or other travel documents. Start the process of obtaining these documents early, as it can take several months to receive them.

  6. Make arrangements for housing: Depending on your study abroad program, you may be required to find your own housing. Research local housing options and make arrangements early to ensure you have a place to stay when you arrive.

  7. Familiarize yourself with the local transportation system: Research the local transportation options, such as trains, buses, and taxis, and familiarize yourself with the cost and route information.

  8. Learn the language: If you’re going to a country where the native language is different from your own, make an effort to learn the language before you arrive. This will make it easier for you to communicate and immerse yourself in the culture.

  9. Get travel insurance: Protect yourself and your belongings by getting comprehensive travel insurance before you leave.

  10. Pack wisely: Make a list of what to pack, keeping in mind the climate and cultural norms of your destination. Pack light and bring items that will make your transition to your new home easier.

In conclusion, studying abroad can be a wonderful and enriching experience, but it requires careful preparation. By taking these 10 essential steps, you can ensure a successful and enjoyable study abroad experience.

Howard University — Spring 2019 Study Abroad Cohort

Take a closer look at the Spring 2019 HU Bison Abroad cohort #StudyAbroadSoBlack

The Spring 2019 cohort utilized a HU Bison Abroad Pre-Departure Passport book to earn stamps for the their participation at events and for completing tasks such as downloading travel apps, registering for the State Department Smart Travelers Enrollment Program, starting a blog/vlog, making a travel playlist, and researching current and historical events related to their country of study.

Those who earned five or more stamps were awarded the official #StudyAbroadSoBlack t-shirt. As shown in the picture above, the spring 2019 cohort of Bison going abroad were very serious about becoming prepared to study abroad, as they all earned a t-shirt!

At the conclusion of the Pre-Departure Orientation on Saturday, students read aloud in unison a #StudyAbroadSoBlack Pledge written by Ms. Montgomery, that starts with the statement “ I (name), pledge to enter my study abroad experience with an open mind and a flexible outlook…” and concludes with the students’ acknowledgement that, “I understand that I am a part of a movement that will impact the entire world.”
